A national seminar on ‘Bhima Bhoi and subaltern literature of Odisha’, to be held on 22-23 February 2020
SAINT, POET AND PHILOSOPHER
Bhima Bhoi, the poet-prophet of Mahima Dharma made tremendous contributions to the cultural heritage of our state Odisha. Bhima Bhoi wrote extensively against the prevailing socio-economic injustice, religious bigotry and caste discriminations. His mission being “jagata uddhara” (liberation of the entire world), he believed in one God, one society and one religion.
Bhima Bhoi was a distinguished poet and revolutionary. His preachings through Mahima Dharma questioned the then central dogma of Brahminical dominance. His doctrine focused around the concept of “one, formless God” for all of humanity. Although his teachings have survived over the past centuries through the oral traditions of his disciples, his literary and social works have unfortunately been largely unexplored. Bhima Bhoi Chair was thus founded with a mission to uncover the role of Bhima Bhoi in shaping the cultural, literary and socio-economic dimensions of Western Odisha in the last decades of the 19th century. Moreover, this Chair aims to carry out research on the life and living conditions of people reeling under poverty, deprivation and multi-level exclusion.
BHIMA BHOI RESEARCH CHAIR
The research focus of the Chair is interdisciplinary, spanning over the areas of social sciences and Humanities. It will include a holistic study and analysis of the literary creations of Bhima Bhoi in particular and subaltern and dalit Odia literature, in general. We would design solutions for the deprived and marginalized people of Odisha for their empowerment. Facilitated by a datahub, we will also develop and maintain a platform for interdisciplinary research in this field which will enable scholars from across the world to perform high-quality research. Moreover, the Chair will open possibilities for collaborations with other individuals and institutions sharing this common vision. A central theme of the research activities performed by the Chair will be to foster and nurture the next generation of researchers.
